A classic ‘Bordeaux Superior’, this wine is made from a blend of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon from mature rootstock grown on well-drained gravelly soil. It is smooth and supple with bright red fruit flavours and is ready to drink from release.

Standing in for Pomerol we have the Château d’Abzac 2009 which is made from the same predominantly Merlot blend – with some Cabernet Sauvignon – and so has that lovely soft ripeness we associate with Pomerol. It isn’t Pétrus (which would cost around 350 times as much) but it is a very nice claret indeed, and better than some Pomerols at two or three times the price.

Top vintage. Good plummy Merlot fruit – a touch of cassis and graphite. Quite grippy tannins. Classic Petit Châteaux Claret in a good year. Will improve with 6-18 months bottle-age.
