Travelling south from Dijon, the 400 hectares of Gevrey Chambertin mark the start of the great vineyards of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. This is a wonderful, traditional Pinot Noir from a fourth generation, family-run, organic estate and comes from the Aux Corvées climat, just behind the family home. We've enjoyed it immensely on its youthful fruit but it should show even better with bottle-age.

This is a terrific, traditional red Burgundy from a fourth generation, family-run, organic estate. The 30 hectares of Charmes-Chambertin form the largest of Gevrey-Chambertin’s nine Grand Crus, and this complex and ageworthy Pinot Noir is dense and dark and has a wonderfully unembellished sense of 'terroir' that first piqued our interest.

Having tasted numerous wines that we liked rather than loved we were thrilled to discover the Gevrey-Chambertin made by Domaine Henri Richard, a 4.5 hectare, family-run, organic estate whose vines lie in the ‘Aux Corvées’climat in the centre of the appellation. We were sufficiently impressed to seek out young patronne Sarah Bastien (grand-daughter of founder Henri) at the domaine and persuade her to allow us a modest allocation.
