Rheinhessen: Jürgen Hofmann Ingelheimer Spätburgunder 2020
While Riesling put Germany on the world wine map, it is increasingly their Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) that is getting people really excited. We were, therefore, thrilled to get hold of a small parcel of rising star Jurgen Hofmann's elegant single-vineyard Spätburgunder.
A fine example of a new wave of Spätburgunders, this gem is grown on limestone-rich soils in the north of the Rheinhessen and raised in French oak for 16 months.
The Rheinhessen is the largest of Germany's 13 quality wine producing regions with around 25,000 hectares under vine, 70% of which produces white wine. Bordered by the Rhine river to the East and North and the Nahe river in the West, the soil types are varied and the undulating terrain supports mixed farming alongside viticulture.

Jürgen Hofmann
In 1971 the Hofmann family farm, which had practiced mixed agriculture up to this point, turned its focus exclusively to winemaking. Taking over in 1998, Jürgen has enthusiastically developed this estate which lies between Mainz and Bingen in the north of the Rheinhessen. He and his wife, Carolyn Willems-Willems, farm their respective family vineyards (Carolyn’s are in the Saar) and make wine together. The labels for the estates’ traditional portfolios, one located in Oberemmel, the other in Appenheim, bear individual illustrations that encapsulate the distinctive character of each wine and the soil on which it is grown. Jürgen has extensive winemaking experience across the work having trained at the renowned wine school in Geisenheim followed by stints in South Africa, California and Romania and for renowned German producer ‘Reh-Kendermann’.
