Cévennes Wine - Buy Wine from the Cévennes Region of France
Vin de Pays Cévennes was created in the nineties from an amalgam of four existing appellations – Salaves, Libac, Uzege and Cevenois. The soil here is similar to that of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with large pudding stones known as ‘galets roulés’ absorbing valuable moisture and storing up daytime heat, releasing both back to the vines at night. This extra warmth increases ripeness and reduces acidity, making good-value spicy southern reds from Grenache & Syrah.
Lionel Pourquier of Domaine Camp Galhan is an up-and-coming Vigneron Independent who left the relative security of the local coopérative at Ribauté-les-Tavernes in the year 2000 in order to go it alone. Lionel’s wines have already graced the pages of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and amply illustrate the value that can still be found in France’s lesser-known viticultural backwaters.
