Bourgueil lies on the Western flank of Touraine on the Northern bank of the Loire and benefits from a mild climate with low rainfall. As at neighbouring Chinon and Saint-Nicolas-de Bourgueil it is the Cabernet Franc grape that dominates here although lesser volumes of Cabernet Sauvignon are permitted.
In Bourgueil, Pierre-Jacques Druet is renowned as a gifted winemaker. His ‘Cent Boisselées’ is a mid-weight offering with supple tannins and a fine concentration of fruit but his brooding ‘Vaumoreau’ is a dense vin de gard with dark sous-bois scents and meaty mouth-filling flavours – game or wild mushrooms would be apposite accompaniments. Pierre-Jacques also makes a pretty, coral-pink saignant rosé. It is fresh and dry and raspberry-scented and perfect for drinking out of doors, on its own or with a dressed crab or prawn salad.
