Jasnieres
Jasnières Wine - Buy Wine from the Jasnières Region of France
The specialist appellation of Jasnières lies on Le Loir, a tributary of La Loire, some 35 kilometres south-west of Le Mans and boasts just 50 hectares under vine, shared between 2 communes called Lhomme and Ruillé-sur-Loir. Chenin Blanc is the exclusive grape here, although Gamay, Cabernet Franc, Pineau d’Aunis and Cot can be cultivated to produce red Coteaux du Loir wines. If Jasnières’ diminutive size has prevented it from developing the reputation it
merits, it has also preserved its unique character and integrity – rather like finding a proper old-fashioned ironmongers amongst a sea of ‘cloned’ chain retailers on the high street.
At Domaine de la Charrière, Joël Gigou and his son Ludovic produce a classic dry Jasnières ‘Clos Saint Jacques’. When the correct conditions prevail and the mists coming off the river induce
botrytis cinerea or ‘noble rot’, Joël and Ludovic also produce their acclaimed ‘Raisins Nobles’ cuvée from low yields of fungus-withered grapes.
