Reuilly is the most westerly of the Central Vineyard AOCs, all of which (Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé, Menetou Salon and Quincy) specialize in Sauvignon. Reuilly is the smallest with a tiny 130 hectares in production and the least well-known, but should not be overlooked. It is home to only a handful of winemakers and produces simple, clean, unoaked and unadulterated wines that are arguably Loire Sauvignon Blanc at its purest. Both the white and rosé wines (the latter made from Pinot Gris) make for ideal aperitifs and are terrific partners for shellfish, hence the town’s close association with the famous Atlantic oyster port of Marennes.
The Cordier family in Reuilly produce a superb Sauvignon Blanc that we have shipped in every vintage over 4 decades. It is quite taut and nervy with notes of elderflowers and nettles and a fine minerally finish. Oysters are a traditional accompaniment but it also goes well with goat’s cheese and asparagus. They also make a soupçon of pale ‘onion-skin’ coloured Pinot Gris rosé. It too is unfailingly reliable, with subtle scents of redcurrants and rose-hips and a crisp, dry palate of summer berries.
