Saumur Champigny: Vieilles Vignes 2010

A rich and powerful wine displaying herbaceous aromas. The palate, of ripe red berries and ‘cut pepper’ and well developed, rounded tannins, precedes a long, clean finish.

Saumur Champigny: Vieilles Vignes 2010

The Filliatreaus' flagship wine. The terrific 'Vieilles Vignes' is made from a parcel of octogenerian vines that yield a strapping dark, earthy wine. It has a wonderful core of ripe cassis flavours and a fine structure of tannins. It should be decanted before drinking and can mature happily for up to a decade. Indeed we are such big fans of this wine that we ship it in every conceivable, format from humble half-bottles to mighty jeroboams.

What others think of this wine...

Julia Harding - JancisRobinson.com says:

Deep cherry colour. Intense, deep and pure Cabernet Franc notes of red fruit, peppery herbs and graphite with a perfect touch of leafiness. Dry, slightly dusty tannins. Just enough flesh. Mostly fresh and dry and a little powdery on the finish. Not for those who like a mouthful of fruit. Elegant. 16.5. Drink 2012-2016.

Jane MacQuitty - Times Weekend, 3rd November 2012. says:

Go to Yapp Bros for the gorgeous Domaine Filliatreau, Saumur Champigny, Vieille Vignes with oodles of lively, leafy, dusky, crunchy, red fruit.

The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com says:

From the consistently excellent Filliatreau, this is Cabernet Franc at its most inviting. Subtle hints of pencil-lead and a touch of leafy freshness add savoury interest to the plump, soft, perfumed blackcurrant and raspberry fruit. Succulent and supple, a great food wine.

Andrew Neather - London Evening Standard, 30/08/2012 says:

Father and son team Paul and Fredrik Filliatreau have now amassed the largest estate in Saumur-Champigny but their standards remain very high. La Grande Vignolle is from a single plot on tuffeau (soft limestone): the 2010 boasts ripe fruit and excellent weight and balance. Their entry-level Domaine Filliatreau 2010 is also nicely balanced, while the Vielles Vignes 2010 is a definite step up: bigger, more complex, longer.
