Saumur: Vignerons de Saumur Blanc 2022

This crisp, white Saumur wine that is produced from Chenin Blanc on the chalky soils of Anjou is a firm favourite with Yapp customers and staff alike. This may have something to do with the eye-catching Charles de Gaulle label, but more likely is because this Saumur Blanc is a refreshing, fruity, bon marché crowd-pleaser that makes for an ideal aperitif or partner to salads.

Tasting Notes

The chalky soils and temperate climate of Saumur and Saumur Champigny are ideally suited to viticulture and vines have been cultivated here since Roman times.

The ever-dependable Cave de Saumur Co-opérative, based in Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, has an unimpeachable track record of making keenly-priced, quality wines with plenty of varietal character and a fine sense of terroir. They have supplied us with failsafe bottlings of Chenin and Cabernet Franc (adorned, at our historic behest, with an eye-catching silhouette of Charles de Gaulle) for so long that they have, by merit and tenacity, effectively become our 'house' wines.

This superb Chenin Blanc, bottled under screwcap, has ripe apple aromas and a whistle-clean palate with a fresh, zesty finish. Chez Yapp, we usually keep a bottle on stand-by in the fridge and, more often than not, another on the go in the kitchen...

Vignerons de Saumur

At Saint Cyr-en-Bourg, just to the south-east of Saumur, the dynamic Vignerons de Saumur Cave Co-opérative has long been a source of really well-made and benignly priced wines. Their Saumur Blanc is a conrnerstone of the Yapp list without which we could barely function. The Cave also produces a versatile sparkling Chenin Blanc, a fine sparkling Crémant de Loire rosé and a supple, youthful red Cabernet Franc.
