This Saumur rouge from Domaine Filliatreau, Château Fouquet is a ripe, rounded Cabernet Franc with a classic ‘cut pepper’ nose. A good concentration of red berry-fruit present in the wine is underpinned by supple tannins with some light, minerally nuances.

The Filliatreaus are renowned for having modernised winemaking in the Saumur and Saumur Champigny regions producing vibrant wines with excellent fruit characteristics. Yapp Brothers have been importing Filliatreau wine since the 1970s and have consolidated their trading relationship since Fredrik joined his father Paul and they bought Château Fouquet. The first vintage shipped was the hugely successful 1990 and since then the wine has gained organic status and acquired a loyal following.

Green peppers and some autumnal fruit on the nose. This is a more complex, structured red Saumur than its inexpensive cousin (with the Yapp designed label). This vintage has only just landed with us and it is a little green on the palate with quite a lot of acidity cutting into the fruit at the moment. Taste of plum, blackcurrant with a reasonable weight but without strong tannins. Definitely a wine to have with food at the moment. I had it with Roast Gressingham Duck breast and the acidity coped well with the meat’s fattiness. Would also be a good match for pork dishes in this regard. Give it a couple of months for the fruit to develop further and it should be just right as a great Summer quaffer out on the terrace. (Tasted 3rd May 2012).
