Savennières: Château d’Epiré 2009

The 2009 ‘Cuvée Classique’ is absolutely terrific with subtle chalk dust and fleurs blanches aromas and a rich, fruity, rounded palate with terrific length and balance. It is already highly accessible but will age well for a further 5 or more years.
The Château d’Epiré estate dates from 1640 and has been run by the Bizard family since 1749. The current patron, Luc Bizard, represents the 7th generation of his family to make wine here.

What others think of this wine...

Sarah Ahmed - The Wine Detective, 02/03/2012. says:

Very classic – liked the wild flower sherry flora description so I’ll stick with that! Edges into marzipan, but beneath there’s a bright, tight seam of mineral, limey acidity. Long and complex. Very good.

Andrew Neather - London Evening Standard, 16/02/2012 says:

Try Château d'Epiré 2009, Savennières. It's dry but rounded and surprisingly rich - a fine example of this classic Loire chenin blanc.

Christelle Guibert and Mark O’Halleron - Decanter Magazine, January 2012. says:

...Similarly seductive in its own fashion is Château d’Epiré, Savennières, Loire, France 2009 with a fantastic stony nose opening up to elegant touches of acacia and citrus fruit.

Decanter Magazine - November 2011 says:

Very stoney on nose, with note of acacia, apple and lime - distinctive and very stylish. Elegant and fresh on palate, very crisp acidity with layers of stoney fruits, nice minerality too. 17/20. Four stars.

David Williams - The Observer 13/11/2011 says:

White wines for Christmas dinner need to be fairly robust if they are to survive the assault of so many competing rich foods, and few do a better job than top-notch Loire chenin blanc. This is an intensely rich and powerful white, with driving acidity, orchard fruit, and a savoury, slightly chalky edge.

Yapp Brothers Staff Review - Tom says:

Startlingly good, complex Chenin from this shockingly under-rated Loire appellation. Waxy, honeyed, with great length and minerality – if this was produced near Beaune it would cost twice the price.

Yapp Brothers Staff Tasting 23/06/2011 says:

A complex and slightly oxidative (in a good way) wine. Tasted better in the afternoon so it likes some air – bien classique – should age well.
