Sauvignon Blanc is a justifiably popular grape, yielding aromatic, fresh, dry white wines and has consequently been planted throughout the wine-making world. Unfortunately a great many Sauvignons are produced inexpertly or with cynically high yields and they can be hugely disappointing. Our recent quest to find an underrated Sauvignon that offered real value for money was not an easy one and we are indebted to our friend Isabelle Legeron (who is France’s first female Master of Wine) for steering us towards Domaine Gardrat in her native Charente-Maritime.
Here on the eastern flank of the Gironde estuary, above Bordeaux, Jean-Pierre and Lionel Gardrat cultivate 35 hectares of vines on well-drained chalky soil. We first shipped their nervy, nettley, whistle-clean Sauvignon last year and it has already established itself as a firm Yapp favourite.
