The Déche family, whose Domaine Millet is based 2 kilometres north of Éauze in the heart of Gascony, were historically producers of Bas Armagnac, which required extensive vine holdings as the distillation process is incredibly reductive. Towards the end of the 20th century the Déches realised that they needed to diversify as domestic consumption of spirits was in serious decline (not least because of the dreaded
alcool-test being rigorously enforced) and so they turned their attention to winemaking. They grafted popular still wine varieties on to their existing rootstock of Folle Blanche and Baco and began producing well-made and keenly-priced Vin de Pays.
