Monbazillac
Monbazillac Wine - Buy Wine from the Monbazillac Region of France
The small, specialist appellation of Monbazillac, just to the south of Bergerac in the Dordogne, is renowned for its unctuous, sweet white wines. Here, low yields of botrytis shrivelled grapes are used to make wonderfully rich wine with a deep golden colour and complex palate of dried fruit, honey and nuts. The finest examples of Monbazillac wine, like our own, are underscored by a bright acidity, and give many a costlier Sauternes a serious run for their money.
Often compared with its prestigious (and costly) neighbour Sauternes, the wine came to Robin Yapp's attention after tasting it on three consecutive occasions on one (non-buying!) trip to France. It was the early inspiration for Yapp Brothers entire Midi range. All available stock of the 1990 Monbazillac vintage was secured to ensure continuity. The name loosely translates as the 'estate of the old rectory'.
