Cassis: Clos Sainte Magdeleine Blanc 2009

The Clos Sainte Magdeleine blanc hails from a blend of Marsanne, Clairette and Ugni Blanc and is an attractive pale straw colour. It has a distinctive bouquet of Provençal pine and wild herbs and an alluring, unoaked palate with diverse flavours of melon, citrus fruit and white currants. One can happily drink it unaccompanied as an up-market aperitif, but its raison d’être is to accompany fish. A big bowl of bouillabaisse would fit the bill nicely.

What others think of this wine...

Simon Hoggart says:

The white wines, for which Cassis is most famous, are all blends, usually including Ugni-Blanc, Clairette, Marsanne and even some Sauvignon Blanc. The most celebrated vineyard is the Clos Ste-Magdeleine, with its stunning pink-washed art deco Chateau. These wines are delicious now and, unusually for a white, will age gracefully for a few years'.

The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com says:

Yum, yum, yum! One of the great things about this wine is the fact that it makes a champion out of three grapes, Clairette, Marsanne and Ugni Blanc, that aren't usually given much exposure for the wonderful wines they make. This should change all that because it's fresh, vibrant, spicy but also slightly herbaceous. It's crying out for good plate of fish or shellfish.

Neil Sowerby - Manchester Confidential, 12/03/2012. says:

Cassis, Clos Sainte Magdeleine Blanc 2009 is from the top grower in a tiny appellation, much of which services the fish restaurants in the resort clinging to the seafront below (Cassis is the town, same name but nothing to do with the famous blackcurrant liqueur). The Clos Sainte Magdeleine smells citrussy with a strong whiff of pine. Yet it hardly prepares you for the complexity of the bone dry wine to come, its fine peach fruit marrying well with a strong herbal tendency. A standalone, individual wine like the (Château) Simone. Vive la France.

Yapp Brothers Staff Review - Hamish says:

A rare treat, this is my favourite summer white for celebrating special events – traditionally my birthday.
