The vineyards of the Côtes du Luberon have a somewhat schizophrenic identity as they indubitably lie in geographic Provence but tend to be attributed to the Rhône valley as a satellite appellation in terms of wine classification. No matter, this is a stunning location and one well-suited to cultivating vines due to a winning combination of good light levels, cool night time temperatures and good drainage. The Margan family, who have been making organic wines here since 1978, are based just outside the quintessential Provençal hill town of Bonnieux in their enviably unspoiled Château la Canorgue. Although they earn a fringe income renting out the château for film and television shoots, the Margans’ real passion is for winemaking and they enjoy a loyal local clientele as well as diverse export markets.
