Château Simone Rouge 2007

Château Simone Rouge - a rare unreconstructed historical gem that belies comparison. Complex ‘cigar box’, sandalwood and sous bois aromas precede a rich, evolved palate with some mushroom and resinous notes – it is often mistaken for top-quality Bordeaux. Plump tannins and a balanced acidity yield a red wine that improves considerably with bottle age.

Château Simone Rouge 2007

The celebrated Château Simone rouge, that accounts for half the production, is blended from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault and a smattering of curious like Castelas and Branforcas that are all vinified together in large, Hungarian oak vats and then racked into traditional barrels for a 12 month élevage before bottling.
It is such an individual wine that attempts to describe it are always difficult – there is some of the gravitas of a venerable old claret coupled with an untamed, sun-kissed, spicy Provençal edge and a fine structure of tannins that will support at least 10 years bottle-age. Sixth generation Château Simone patron René Rougier jokes that “its typicality is that it is atypical”, so the only answer really is to try a bottle!

What others think of this wine...

Victoria Moore - Daily Telegraph, 30/03/2012. says:

Jason Yapp of Yapp Brothers likes garlic lamb and ratatouille with Château Simone 2007 France. From the teeny appellation of Palette near Aix-en-Provence, it’s made with grenache, mourvèdre and syrah. Jason sent me a bottle, warning that it “reveals its charms slowly but merits persistence”. That proved just right; Château Simone is the sort of wine I love to drink and always fear I shall miss in the hurly-burly of the tasting room: a wine with restraint but a hint of wildness.
