Brézème
The diminutive appellation of Brézème lies 15 kilometres south of Valence on the Drôme tributary of the Rhône and is technically in the southern Rhône. In reality it has far more in common in terms of terroir, grapes and taste with its much nearer neighbours in the northern Rhône and tends to be regarded as an honorary cru of the Rhône Septentrionales, which seems logical to us. The foremost winemaker here is Jean-Marie Lombard who is rightly credited with reviving the appellation when he took over his father’s farm in 1972. The dominant grape is Syrah which yields feisty red wines with firm tannins that repay bottle-age in the short to medium-term (3-5 years from vintage) and are renowned for their compatibility with bold, meaty dishes, especially game.
