Brézème: Eugène de Monicault 2009

Full throttle Syrah with classic dark berry flavours, good plummy fruit and additional complexity compared to its Grand Chêne sibling.

Brézème: Eugène de Monicault 2009

In addition to the principal red wine Grand Chêne, Jean-Marie Lombard produces a second Cuvée called Eugène de Monicault (a 19th Century artillery captain and mayor of Livron, since you ask), which has a longer (12 month) upbringing in younger (3-5 year-old) barrels. It too is made from pure Syrah and is a little more polished and structured than its sibling but has the same honest, earthy appeal. Both wines are suited to simple, rustic cuisine – game being ideal.

  • Style: Red Wine, Dry (Sec), Full-bodied
  • Region: RhoneBrezeme
  • Producer: Jean-Marie Lombard
  • Vintage: 2009
  • Grape variety (Cépage): Syrah
  • Wine pairing - drink with: Casserole, Game
  • Cellarage: Medium term (up to 10 years), as the fruit and tannin will integrate.
  • Vinification: Only 3.7 acres of the domaine's oldest vines (planted in 1974) provide fruit (which is de-stemmed) for this cuvée, so volumes are extremely low (circa 800 cases/ annum). Fermentation of 15 days in cement vats, where malolactic fermentation also occurs, is followed by 14 months in 3 year old barrels.
  • Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 13.5%
