Collioure: Domaine La Tour Vieille 'La Pinède' Rouge 2021

A rugged, chest-thumping, life-affirming blend of (mostly) Grenache Noir with Mourvèdre and Carignan, imbued with a wealth of briary berry scents and flavours supported by rugged but ripe tannins. This Collioure wine drinks well from release, if decanted, and will age well for a decade. A magnificent partner to local dishes rich in peppers, anchovies and garlic, rich North African tagines or a smoked aubergine Baba Ganoush.

Tasting Notes

The principal La Tour Vieille bottling of red Collioure, in volume terms, is called 'La Pinède' - a wine that hails from a blend of majority Grenache Noir, with remainder of Mourvèdre and Carignan. Like the white 'Les Canadells', the red 'La Pinède' is named after the individual plot of vines from which it emanates.

Situated on the steep slopes of the Côte Vermeille just inside French Catalonia, Vincent Cantié's Domaine la Tour Vieille has the most vertigo-inducing views from its vineyards. Such steepness requires significant care and attention, so labour is entirely manual as no machine can cope with the slopes.

Producer

Domaine la Tour Vieille (Vincent Cantié)

Domaine la Tour Vieille was created in the early 80s by Vincent Cantié (from Collioure) and Christine Campadieu (from Banyuls) from their respective family domaines. It now comprises 32 acres of vines on vertiginous schist terraces overlooking the sea which have to be meticulously farmed by hand, making harvesting more perilous than most. Buffeted by the hefty Tramontane wind, this is viticulture at its toughest.

They have an excellent track record of producing lovingly-crafted wines, both still and fortified, with a strong sense of terroir and tradition.
