“Chinon Blanc is a rare style of wine, and this is the finest I
have tasted in years. Tailor-made for the mint
recipes, the herbal, tangy, refreshing chenin
blanc flavours in this wine
are incredibly summery and
desperately classy at the same time.”

“Pale and unusual, with serpentine strength
(in that it has flex and length that comes from
acidity and subtleness, rather than from shouty fruitiness). Made from
sciacarello, nielluccio and vermentino, it has a herbaceous savour that goes
well with food. I’m also a fan of the same
producer’s white.”

Cassis: Clos Ste
Magdeleine 2007 Rosé
|
£14.75
per
bottle
|

£177.00
per
case
|

|
|
“The beautiful Provençal fishing port
of Cassis is home to some of the most beguiling and
memorable wines in France. Only 14 producers
make wine here and François Sack, of Clos
Sainte Magdeleine, is my favourite. I have long
been a fan of the stunning, quirky white wine created
here, with its herbal tang and mildly oily, honey and
walnut notes (the 2007 vintage, which I tasted for
the first time the other day, arrives in the autumn
and is simply amazing). Very occasionally,
though, a small parcel of the ultra-rare Cassis
rosé makes it to our shores.
Made from Cinsault, Grenache, and
Mourvèdre, this coral-pink wine is one of the
most ethereal and heart-achingly beautiful releases
of the season. If you are an accomplished
epicurean and you want to prove your credentials once
and for all, then pour this wine at a summer lunch
alongside a mountainous platter of lobster,
langoustines, crévettes
grises, crab claws, clams and
oysters, and watch your guests go green with
envy at your imperial food and wine-matching
skills. This is a partnership fashioned in
heaven. You will feel compelled to order it by
the case, but there will probably be only one
opportunity to do so because Yapp has a very thirsty
fanbase and they will
soon be alerted to its arrival in Britain.”

Château de Ligré Rosé

“A wine such as Château de
Ligré 2007 Chinon Rosé is absolutely
lovely – with its fragrantly leafy perfume,
soft, fruit texture and a bone dry finish. This
is obviously made from delightfully ripe Loire
Cabernet Franc grapes yet haw only 12.5 per cent
alcohol and would make a great partner for all sorts
of white wine foods.”

“They were making sparkling wine in Limoux,
south west of Carcassonne, long before they cottoned
on in Champagne. This fresh, fruity,
full-flavoured example from Philippe Collin, son of a
Champenois
vigneron, is a
beauty.”

|
“I find good rosé irresistible at
this time of year, and one of the best I’ve
tasted recently is Pierre and Fabienne
Ferrand’s Château
de Ligré Rosé, Chinon 2007. The pale
pink wine is made from Cabernet Franc with just a
touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives it wonderful
crunchy flavours of violets, redcurrants and a
pleasant hint of green capsicums. It’s got a
trace of residual sugar (less than 3 grams per
litre), but it also has crisp, zesty acidity and a
bone-dry finish. A really pleasant summer food wine
to accompany salads and light seafood
dishes.”

Châteauneuf

“A good wine list deserves a good
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, so I think Claire
Michel’s Le Vieux Donjon Rouge 2006 is worth a
look. There’s a lot of depth and complexity to
this wine, which shows notes of lavender and herbs,
along with plenty of smoky red fruit. The silky
texture contrasts nicely with the grippy tannins. This is a
full-bodied, powerful wine with a haunting, elegant
finish. If the examples of the 2000 and the 1995 are
anything to go by, this wine should age nicely
– if you can keep your hands off it that long.
If not, I’d match this now to a lamb tagine or even a good
steak.”

“Very Sancerrey’ my first
thought. Which is just as it should be. A
bit of gunflint and lovely tranquillity. 2006
was a better Loire vintage than 2007. If a wine
is this good, the age does it no harm: as the sharp
grass and citrus aromas soften, a more noble
character comes through.”
