Hermitage: Jean-Louis Chave Rouge 1981 Magnums

Typically, red Chave Hermitage exhibits aromas of dark, autumnal fruit and black pepper with undertones of mushrooms, game and leather. The palate, which can be taught and quite closed in youth, shows wonderful complexity with maturity and diverse flavours of red and black berries, plums, pepper and spices combine over a background of rugged tannins to produce a profound wine of amazing structure and delineation.

  • Hermitage: Jean-Louis Chave Rouge 2002 Magnums

Hermitage: Jean-Louis Chave Rouge 2002 Magnums

One of the candidates for the Rhone Valley’s “wine of the vintage” is Chave’s 2002 Hermitage. A draconian selection has resulted in a deep ruby/purple-colored offering revealing sweet notes of melted licorice, briery berries, earth, and herbs. Medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant, and intense, this forward-styled Hermitage appears to be better than the 1992, 1993, and 1994, which are all fine wines that are holding up well. The 2002 should be at its peak between 2005-2015. What Chave accomplished in the extremely challenging 2002 vintage is unquestionably noteworthy. Not because of tiny yields

  • Hermitage: Jean-Louis Chave Rouge 2006

    Hermitage: Jean-Louis Chave Rouge 2006

"Superior to the 2007, the 2006 Hermitage reminds me of Chave’s brilliant 1991. An incredibly subtle perfume of black raspberries, creme de cassis, camphor, and acacia flowers is followed by an elegant, concentrated wine with beautifully integrated acidity, tannin, wood, and alcohol. This seamless, gorgeously-proportioned, large-framed wine represents the definition of finesse, elegance, and terroir. It will be drinkable in several years, and should last for 20-25 years. " 96 points. Robert Parker - Wine Advocate, April 2009.
