Alsace: Léon Beyer 'Coeur de Chasse' Pinot Noir 2018

The Beyer family's 'Coeur de Chasse' bottling of Pinot Noir is an assemblage of fruit mostly from family-owned 'Grand Cru' vineyards. Only made in the best vintages, it drinks well on its youthful berry fruit but has the stuffing to age.

Tasting Notes

Grown on argilo-calcaire (clay-limestone) soils, this cuvée has the structure to age - in this vintage which, to quote Marc Beyer, "...brought smiles back to our faces."

Raspberry, redcurrant and red cherry aromas dominate the nose with a touch of spice on the palate and supple tannins.

Serve with: Tarte Flambée (with crème fraiche, onions, lardons), small game.

Léon Beyer

Situated just outside the impressive medieval town of Eguisheim, the Beyer family have produced wine in these parts since 1580. The firm was formally founded in 1870 by Emile Beyer who was succeeded by a son and grandson, both named Léon Beyer and both mayors of Eguisheim in their day.

With significant Grand Cru vine-holdings in the communes of Eichberg and Pfersigberg and 23 hectares in total, this domaine has always championed impressive, dry wines that complement the famous gastronomy of the region. These days this important Alsatian house is ably run by Léon II's charismatic son Marc. 75% of their production is exported.
