Saar: Willems-Willems 'Schiefer' Oberemmel Riesling 2021

This elegant, intense Oberemmel Riesling comes from the steep slopes of the Saar valley where Carolin Willems is the 5th generation of women winemakers. ‘Schiefer’ refers to the slate soils of the area which lend saline minerality to the wine and the red triangle on the label references rare red slate in particular.

Characteristically dry ('trocken') with lime and green apple freshness and relatively low alcohol which works wonderfully with buttery, rich dishes especially poultry and fish.

Tasting Notes

Fifth generation winemaker Carolin Willems (aka 'Mrs Carolin Hofmann') produces this crisp, elegant, minerally Riesling from +30-year-old vines on the steep, slate ridges of the Rosenberg in Oberremmel, neighbouring the renowned Scharzhofberg vineyard.

The steep-sided Mosel valley (formerly known as Mosel-Saar-Ruwer) is internationally acclaimed for the production of Riesling. Slate-based soils dominate in the middle Mosel, a region which includes the Saar and Ruwer tributaries.

Willems-Willems

Willems-Willems, so good that they named it twice! Fifth generation winemaker Carolin Willems (aka Mrs Carolin Hofmann) took on the responsibility of producing her family’s wines in 2001 while completing her vinicultural studies at the prestigious University of Geisenheim (which included internships in Paarl and Adelaide).

Carolin produces excellent Riesling and Pinot Noir from the steep slate slopes that surround the small village of Konz-Oberemmel, south of Trier, where the Saar and Mosel rivers meet.

Her husband, Jürgen Hofmann is also a talented winemaker and between locations in the Saar and Rheinhessen, they share facilities, expertise and a wonderful tasting room in Appenheim in the Rheinhessen.

Saar: Willems-Willems Riesling 'Schiefer' - Yapp Brothers One Minute Review

Meirion Williams reviews the Willems-Willems Riesling from the Saar region of Germany. 'Schiefer' means it is grown on a devonian blue slate soil, south facing, that absorbs heat from the summer sun, extending the growing season. A classic Riesling nose of white flowers and a mineral palate. Works well as an aperitif, and pairs with spicy asiatic dishes.
