Minervois: Domaine Le Cazal 'Tradition' 2021

A long-time quest for a great value Minervois wine came to fruition with this cracking little red from Domaine Le Cazal. It is a traditional un-oaked wine with fine garrigue aromas and a spicy mid-weight palate of dark berry fruit offset by supple tannins.

Tasting Notes

The Derrojas make their Minervois cuvée 'Tradition' from a classic wine blend of Carginan, Grenache and Syrah, in roughly equal proportions, that are hand-harvested and then matured in concrete vats, and bottled the following Spring to conserve its juicy, youthful fruit and bright garrigue berry characteristics.

It has a lovely, briary bouquet of hedgerow berries and a warming palate of dark, autumnal fruit with spicy undertones. This Minervois wine is ideally suited to simple grills and rustic dishes; a cassoulet would be ideal.

After fermentation the wine is racked into concrete vats for 8 months prior to bottling.

Domaine Le Cazal

Claude and Martine Derroja preside over 18 hectares of vines, grown on chalk and clay soils, all of which are classified as AOC Minervois. They represent the 5th wine-making generation of the Derroja family who have farmed here since 1870. 'Respect' is Claude's guiding principal for the land, for his wines and his customers. Claude farms under the certified 'Agriculture Raisonée' programme, which favours minimalist intervention in the vineyard and is seen by many as a stepping stone towards becoming fully organic. For those interested in visiting the Domaine, Claude and Martine also run a gîte that can house up to 8 people and has impressive views of the local countryside.
