Pouilly-Fumé: Domaine Dominique Guyot 'Les Loges' 2022
Dominique Guyot produces this bright, rich, rounded Pouilly Fumé wine from mature rootstock on the coveted 'Les Loges' escarpment in the centre of this Loire appellation, which is reserved for wines made from Sauvignon Blanc.
This superb example of Pouilly Fumé drinks jolly well on its own but shellfish, asparagus and goat's cheese are all apposite accompaniments.
The wines of Pouilly are often compared with those of neighbouring Sancerre ("Water divides us wine unites us" is a popular local saying) however they are often richer and more full-bodied and frequently require more time to evolve.
Dominique Guyot's Pouilly Fumé wine has a bouquet of gooseberries and gun-flint and a fresh, zesty, mineral-edged palate with a persistent, dry finish.
The UK has long been Pouilly-Fumé's largest export customer and we've been importing racy whites from the Guyot family for the last half-century. Robin Yapp noted that when he first visited the Guyots in the early 70s, they were "...faintly amused that the fame of the family's wine should have been discovered by English wine merchants." While there was no wine to spare that year, Robin was promised an allocation should he visit the following year and "...gradually weaned away more and more of the Guyots' wine; we try not to think too much about what has befallen the locals who used to buy it all."

Domaine Dominique Guyot
Dominique Guyot continues the family tradition of producing taught, flinty, wonderfully delineated Sauvignon Blanc, which merits serious attention. A touch firmer and leaner than most of its peers, this is a contemplative wine that opens out with exposure to air and is well-suited to food.
