Alsace: Léon Beyer 'Réserve Personnelle' Gewürztraminer 2019
Gewürztraminer is a classic Alsatian variety that polarises opinion, but this is a very fine example of the genre - spice, lychee, ginger, orange flavours. It makes a great match with the local Munster cheese or spicy food.
Gewürztraminer is probably the best-known Alsace wine, and this one from Léon Beyer is full-bodied and well-structured. Its intense bouquet displays rich aromas of fruit, flowers and spices (gewurz = spicy). Powerful and seductive, sometimes slightly sweet, it can often age well. Serve cool (10 degrees C.), as an aperitif or with any rich cuisine, such as strong or blue cheese. It is superb with spicy cuisine like Chinese, Thai, Indian and Japanese.

Léon Beyer
Situated just outside the impressive medieval town of Eguisheim, the Beyer family have produced wine in these parts since 1580. The firm was formally founded in 1870 by Emile Beyer who was succeeded by a son and grandson, both named Léon Beyer and both mayors of Eguisheim in their day.
With significant Grand Cru vine-holdings in the communes of Eichberg and Pfersigberg and 23 hectares in total, this domaine has always championed impressive, dry wines that complement the famous gastronomy of the region. These days this important Alsatian house is ably run by Léon II's charismatic son Marc. 75% of their production is exported.
