Value and variety from the Rhône, Loire, Burgundy, Jura, Saar & South Africa.
This is our 'Sommelier Service' case – a subscription arrangement where customers get a delivery of six different wines (two bottles of each) every two months for £149 – but it can also be purchased as a stand-alone. For further details of the service, give us a call, or see here for regular wine deliveries. Commercial break over, what's in it?
Three varied whites, for starters. The Meffre family at Domaine Saint Gayan have recently started producing a refreshing aperitif from roughly half Picquepoul Blanc and equal parts Bourboulenc and Grenache Blanc. We are suitably impressed, it's a bargain and works well with seafood or lighter dishes. Eagle-eyed spelling bees amongst you will enjoy the different logography of 'IGP Mediterranée' on front and back labels.
Fifth generation winemaker Carolin Willems makes the crisp, elegant, minerally 'Schiefer' Riesling from 30-year-old vines on the steep, slate slopes of the Saar (a tributary of the Mosel). Characteristically dry with lime and green apple freshness and relatively low alcohol (11.5%), it partners admirably with buttery dishes, especially poultry and fish.
The richest of the whites is the Saint Catherine Single Vineyard Chardonnay from South Africa's Western Cape. It has a lovely golden colour, toasty top notes and a ripe tropical fruit palate with a creamy texture. Barbecued prawns with a chilli and mango salsa would be our ideal food accompaniment.
The reds are all made closer to home. Arnaud Aucoeur's Morgon 'Côte de Py' 2018 has been flying out of our cellars all summer after its Guide Hachette Coup de Coeur coincided with a tremendous review from Jancis Robinson OBE, MW – 'absolutely gorgeous now. VGV (Very Good Value). 17/20'. This is backed up by the reliable red Saumur (Cabernet Franc) in the excellent 2018 vintage and lesser-known ruby-coloured Poulsard from the Jura, which harbours aromas of red fruits and a spicy palate with some grip. It is the perfect wine partner to grilled trout or Morteau sausage with lentils.
As ever, this case is available as all red or all white.
