Beaumes de Venise: Domaine de Durban 'Vielles Vignes' 2020

Red Beaumes de Venise was upgraded to full AOC status in 2005, 60 years after its (better known) sweet Muscat appellation sibling. Consequently, it flies under the radar as a cracking value Cru. Unfiltered and vinified in concrete this is traditional Southern Rhone red winemaking in its element.

Tasting Notes

Over the last decade the Leydier family at Domaine de Durban have (in addition to their white Muscat de Beaumes de Venise) also been bottling this fine red Beaumes de Venise that now enjoys full 'Appellation Contrôlée' status.

Made from a blend of 70% Grenache Noir, 25% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, the 'Vieilles Vignes' cuvée is a wonderful, life-affirming wine that drinks well from release, but will reward 3-5 years bottle-age. With a lovely, sun-baked berry bouquet and a brooding, briary palate, it calls for warming winter daubes and slow-cooked stews.
