Best of Yapp @ Le Gavroche

Six historic food and wine matches from Yapp lunches at Le Gavroche.

Alas, Le Gavroche closed its doors at 43 Upper Brook Street on Saturday 13th January; albeit with one final hedonistic week of private parties after that for friends, family, catering students and suppliers. The impact of the Roux family and this institution on the culinary landscape of the UK is impossible to overstate. Given what we've heard about Michel Roux's busy diary in 2024, however, we suspect this may be more of an 'au revoir' than an 'adieu' and we already have plans to continue our legendary 'Gavroche' lunches at Emily Roux and Diego Ferrari's acclaimed Notting Hill restaurant Caractère (watch this space).

In the meantime, we've delved into our archives to research some of the finest food and wine pairings enjoyed by our and their customers over the four decades that we co-hosted lunches. The Rhône, Jura, Languedoc, Provence, Corsica and Béarn are all represented in a stellar line-up. Ambitious cooks are welcome to recreate the partnerships below, while other may simply wish to raise a glass to a very special place and people.

This mixed case includes

1 x Crémant du Jura: Domaine Jean-Louis Tissot£0.00

"Produced by brother and sister Jean-Christophe and Valérie Tissot in the hills above Arbois in the Jura, it's creamy, toasty with a whisper of keen citrus and a long satisfying finish. You could spend twice as much on champagne and have only half the fun."
Jonathan Ray - The Spectator.

1 x Crozes-Hermitage: Alain Graillot Blanc 2022£0.00

An elegant blend of Marsanne and Roussanne from one of the Rhône's leading winemakers. Not for nothing is this Crozes-Hermitage Blanc the favourite Rhône white of many a wine journalist!

1 x Vin de France: Mas Bruguière 'Les Mûriers' Blanc 2022£0.00

Xavier Bruguière's wonderful white wine 'Les Mûriers' (the Mulberry trees) is bottled as a humble Vin de France - there is no white permitted in the Pic Saint-Loup cru. It is made in this vintage from a blend of 70% Vermentino and 30% Roussanne. Xavier recommends serving it with a mushroom spelt risotto (speltotto) or a grilled veal chop with braised fennel. Certified organic.

1 x Vin de Corse Sartène: Domaine Saparale Rouge 2022£0.00

A lovely briary red wine from Corsica blended from 80% Sciacarello and 20% Nielluccio - just the thing to accompany grilled red meat or a ripened Brocciu cheese.

1 x IGP Méditerranée: Domaine Richeaume 'Tradition' Rouge 2020£0.00

The rich, red 'Cuvée Tradition' from Domaine Richeaume is a long-standing Yapp favourite, blended (in this vintage) from 60% Grenache, 23% Carignan and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon. This organic IGP Méditerranée would be the perfect provençal pairing with roast leg of lamb studded with garlic and anchovies.

1 x Jurançon Moelleux: Domaine Bellegarde 'Historique' 2019£0.00

Pascal Labasse is justifiably renowned for the superb sweet wines he produces. His 'Hitorique' Jurançon Moelleux is made from 80% Petit Manseng and 20% Gros Manseng that are harvested at optimum ripeness. Vivacious crisp and ripe citrus aromas lead to rich tropical fruit flavours underlined by a touch of sweet spice with refreshing acidity. Drink lightly chilled.
