Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life: death and taxes – but there is a third certainty, and as much as I try and pretend it's not happening my children will not let me forget that Christmas is on the near horizon. My son is after numerous gizmos for Christmas that changes daily on which particular adverts he's been watching (having said that the Nintendo 3DS does seem a permanent fixture on the changeable list) and my daughter is after a Cannon DSLR (aren't we all?) – but gizmos aside, the food and wine of Christmas needs careful attention to detail – after all, it's time to celebrate.

We often refer to the Yapp Christmas Sale as 'Legendary' - but it has rightly become a staple of the festive season preparation. On my first Yapp Sale, a couple arrived early doors on the Friday – these intrepid customers had left Northumbria at 3.30am and were in Mere in time for opening. It's all part of the inevitable run-up, that starts for me when my wife notes which weekend we're going to go to 'Fine Pines' to get the Christmas evergreen.
