Charmes-Chambertin: Domaine Henri Richard Grand Cru 2020

This is a terrific, traditional red Burgundy from a fourth generation, family-run, organic estate. The 30 hectares of Charmes-Chambertin form the largest of Gevrey-Chambertin's nine Grand Crus, and this complex and ageworthy Pinot Noir is dense and dark and has a wonderfully unembellished sense of 'terroir' that first piqued our interest. Certified biodynamic.

Tasting Notes

If one is travelling from Dijon, the 400 hectares of Gevrey-Chambertin mark the start of the great vineyards of the Côtes de Nuits. This traditional Charmes-Chambertin hails from a 'climat' that lies just across the D122 'Route des Grand Crus' from Chambertin and Clos de Beze, south of the town towards Nuits-Saint-Georges.

A restrained raspberry bouquet precedes a dense, meaty palate with a firm tannic structure and bright acidity. With all the components of a fine Vin de Garde, we shall eke it out over the next few years.

Domaine Henri Richard

This is a traditional, family-run, organic estate. Domaine founder, Jean Richard, was a cooper, and father of Henri Richard. The former bought the 1st parcel of Mazoyères-Chambertin in 1938 from the Burgundian writer Gaston Roupnel. Henri Richard received his Oenology diploma in 1939, and took care of the Domaine until 1977, succeeded by son-in-law Jean Bastien, then daughter Margaret in 1990.

The continuity of Domaine Henri Richard is now assured by the fourth generation, Sarah Bastien, daughter of Margaret and Jean, together with her partner Guillaume Berthier. Wine runs in her blood: Sarah recently joined the domain with a Masters degree in Wine Knowledge and International Trade.
