Collioure: Domaine La Tour Vieille 'Les Canadells' Blanc 2022

A wonderful esoteric, slightly resinous, full bodied, dry white Collioure wine. It is deliberately made with a slightly oxidative edge, with a sherry-like bouquet and a complex palate of orchard fruit offset by wild herb notes and a long, elegant finish.

Tasting Notes

The Collioure blanc from Domaine La Tour Vieille, called 'Les Canadells', is made from an unusual blend of mostly Grenache Gris with some Grenache Blanc, along with Roussanne.

It is a great food wine, and producer Vincent Cantié is very precise in the dishes he recommends as partners - rock fish, grilled squid, white meat in sauce or cheese (specifically Comté, Camembert or Reblochon).

VinificationThe climate is well suited to viticulture as plenty of sunshine ensures optimum ripening conditions for the grapes whilst the strong Tramontane wind keeps the vines pest free. Grown on 100% schist, only the best fruit is picked 'à la main bien sûr!' from 30-year-old vines. The wine is pressed in the Vaslin-Bucher press and bottled at the beginning of the following summer.

Producer

Domaine la Tour Vieille (Vincent Cantié)

Domaine la Tour Vieille was created in the early 80s by Vincent Cantié (from Collioure) and Christine Campadieu (from Banyuls) from their respective family domaines. It now comprises 32 acres of vines on vertiginous schist terraces overlooking the sea which have to be meticulously farmed by hand, making harvesting more perilous than most. Buffeted by the hefty Tramontane wind, this is viticulture at its toughest.

They have an excellent track record of producing lovingly-crafted wines, both still and fortified, with a strong sense of terroir and tradition.
