Cornas: Equis 2016
A lovely Cornas wine in the modern style, produced by Alain Graillot's son, Max and friend Thomas Schmittel, who are steadily building up a successful négociant business by securing small parcels of grapes from prime locations.
This Cornas wine has a bright core of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit supported by fondant tannins, peppery undertones and deftly-integrated oak. If decanted, you could happily drink this precocious offering from release but it will undoubtedly benefit from 5-10 years bottle-age.

Maxime Graillot (who was born in 1977) has followed in his father’s footsteps and after studying at the Dijon Wine School he struck out on his own in 2004 working 6.5 hectares of vines on a site called Les Pichères close to his father’s estate on the Chassis plateauin Crozes Hermitage. Maxime produces a light, forward drinking Spring-bottling of red Crozes Hermitage called ‘Equionxe’ as well as a denser, more senior wine under his Domaine des Lises label.
