Côte Rôtie: Patrick Jasmin 'Oléa' 2018

"The 2018 Cote Rotie Olea is a step up from the 2016, artfully combining awesome aromas of violets and woodsmoke with layers of luscious dark fruit. It's full-bodied and silky yet with enough structure to potentially age a couple of decades. Drink 2021 - 2040. (94 - 96)/100."
Joe Czerwinski - The Wine Advocate.

Tasting Notes

This is Patrick Jasmin's small-volume flagship cuvée of Côte Rôtie. Named 'Oléa' after the jasmine flower, it is aged for two years in oak barrels before bottling without filtration, resulting in a dark, dense wine that merits decanting.

Wonderfully exuberant floral nose laced with ripe red cherry and cranberry notes underlined with flakey cinnamon stick and black olive tapenade savouriness. This has the structure to age and will only develop more savoury notes.

Over four generations, the Jasmin family was one of a handful of domaines to concentrate its efforts on making only one Domaine Côte-Rôtie. In 2015, Patrick began making a select cuvée named ‘Olea’ after the jasmine flower. It has a little more new oak and is matured 10 months longer than the ‘la Giroflarie’, the main domaine wine and (an older name for the Côte Baudin). Longer lived than 'la Giroflarie', in top vintages, it has the legs to last 20 to 25+ years.

Patrick Jasmin

Patrick is a fourth generation winemaker, who took over from his father Robert (after his sudden death) in 1999. Patrick's Great-Grandfather, Alexandre, was the chef at Château Ampuis and he was awarded some vines for services to the estate in the early 1900's. Today Patrick farms 5.3 hectares of vines located in 12 parcels in 8 separate climats or lieu-dits spread across both escarpments of Côte Rôtie – the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde. Patrick deploys approximately 5% of Viognier in his classic Côte Rôtie and commendably only produces two cuvées of Côte Rôtie, alongside a number of IGP (Vin de Pays) bottlings. Patrick's extensive vine-holdings allow him an enviably broad palette of fruit from which to blend and his wine typically has a harmonious integration of fruit and tannin which is why it has been described as the 'most Burgundian' wine of the appellation.
