Côtes du Roussillon Villages: Domaine du Clos des Fées 'Le Clos des Fées' Rouge 2020

Hervé Bizeul's 'Clos des Fées' rouge bottling is sourced from selected plots of very old Carignan and Grenache bush vines (aged 70 to 100 years old) from limestone-clay hillsides, plus younger Syrah and Mourvèdre. Blended from equal parts Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir and Carignan Noir, it is aged for 18 months in new barrels. Brightly dark-fruited, it shows its Syrah dominance in the blend and drinks best after several years in bottle. Ideal with slow-braised stews or grillades.

Tasting Notes

Miniscule parcels of the best old-vine fruit from limestone-clay soils are carefully looked after in the vineyard with extensive bud and shoot removal, green harvesting and appropriate leaf-thinning. Each component is picked according to phenolic ripeness by parcel and soil type necessitating multiple vineyard passes.

Rich concentrated ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit aromas are lifted by a distinct savoury, meaty and garrigue herb edge with a little vanilla (from oak). Concentrated and mouth-filling in flavour with a little oak underlining the fruit. With the elegance of the vintage, it has a good freshness and vivacity with fondant tannins and lovely length so best decanted in its youth.

Hervé suggests serving it with duck breast (cooked rare), a well-hung côte de boeuf with confit shallots, venison stew or slow-braised wild boar.

VinificationCareful selection in the vineyard through multiple passes and picked according to ripeness. Also optically sorted after de-stemming. Vinified partically in 5-hectolitre demi-muids and in tronconic stainless steel vats. All pumping over, racking etc is done using gravity rather than pumps. Moved to barrel when ferments are warm, with malolactic fermentation permitted before maturation in new barrels (Saury) for around 18 months.

Clos des Fées (Hervé Bizeul)

In 1981, while in his early twenties, Hervé Bizeul was acclaimed the Best Young Sommelier in France. In 1998, after a spell in journalism, Hervé transferred his skills and attention to a small parcel of abandoned vines in a corner of the Roussillon that he felt had great potential.

Despite vinifying his first vintage at the back of a friend's cellar, the Clos des Fées domaine has gone from strength to strength and two decades later is revered throughout France.
