Crozes-Hermitage: Héritiers Chéron-Misset 'La Grand Comtadine' 2018
A traditional, mid-weight Crozes-Hermitage from Yves Chéron (Pascal Frères), newly labelled as ‘La Grand Comtadine’ (a reference to the property bought by Yves’ father in the 1960s near Vacqueyras). With classic Syrah farmyard and saddle leather aromas preceding a palate of juicy red berry fruit offset by firm, well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity, this can't fail to please when matched with a good steak or confit duck.
Crozes Hermitage is the northern Rhône's largest appellation, often producing up to eight times as much wine as nearby Hermitage. La Grand Comtadine property dates from the 1920s and originally had 2 hectares of vineyards. Bought in the 1960s by Burgundy native Denis Chéron (Yves’s father) who recognised the potential of Vacqueyras and expanded the business to make wines from parcels of grapes grown across the Rhône.
This parcel of Crozes’ comes from mature vines (averaging 35 years-old) grown on red clay and ‘cailloutis roulés’ (rounded pebbles) soils. Its cold maceration gives wonderfully bright, crunchy red fruit aromas with balanced tannins and acidity set against a core of concentrated fruit. Full of finesse and with a lengthy smooth finish.

|Cellarage||This relatively youthful Crozes Hermitage wine comes into its own after 2 to 3 years bottle age and will age happily for a further 2 to 3 years thereafter.|
|Vinification||Syrah grapes are picked by hand via a triage sorting process. The fruit is destemmed before cold soaking for 5 days followed by a 20-day warm temperature-controlled fermentation using indigenous yeasts, before extended maturation in tank and barrel.|

Yves Chéron (aka Pascal Frères) is a Négociant-Vinificateur – a wine merchant and winemaker, who lives on an attractive estate below the Dentelles de Montmirail. He produces his own Gigondas & Vacqueyras (both named Grand Montmirail) from vineyards at the domaine, as well as vinifying wines from bought in grapes at his négociant enterprise, Pascal Frères, which is situated between the two villages.
