"While easily producing one of the top lineups of Condrieu, this estate is increasingly focusing on high quality reds as well."

We were back on the buying trail in the Rhône, Provence and Languedoc in October after an 18-month hiatus. Cellars were still busy after a complicated 2021 harvest that was picked around 3 weeks later than any vintage since 2014. Apart from catching up on all the news from wineries, our primary motive was to taste the 2020 vintage which will inform our Rhône report and en primeur release in a few weeks' time.

A stand out visit was at Domaine Vernay where we spent an informative couple of hours in the pleasurable company of Christine and her daughter Emma, who is now fully involved with the wine-making after several years working in hospitality in Paris, wine studies at Maçon and an internship chez Jean-Louis Chave.

While Domaine Vernay will forever be associated with Condrieu and the salvation of the Viognier grape, their red wines have emerged as grands vins in their own right over the past two decades. Tasting the domaine's elegant Saint-Joseph 'Terres d'Encre' 2019 – de-stemmed fruit from one and a half hectares of 30-year-old Syrah vines grown on south-facing granitic soil at Chavanay, just south of Condrieu – and silky Côte-Rôtie 'Blonde de Seigneur' 2019 – from four different lieux-dits on the schist slopes of the 'Côte Blonde' - resulted in personal buying aide-memoires across team Yapp. 2019 was a hot, dry vintage in the Northern Rhône which produced impressive, powerful wines that we tasted frequently on our visits (some from bottle, other final blends from barrel). In Côte-Rôtie (where a small percentage of Viognier is added to the Syrah) and in northerly, cooler sections of Saint-Joseph, the wines have a freshness and immediate accessibility that is less evident further south, for example, in Cornas and Hermitage. The six-pack below comes highly recommended.

This six-bottle mixed case contains three bottles each of:

RED:
Saint-Joseph: Domaine Georges Vernay 'Terres d'Encre' 2019
Côte Rôtie: Domaine Georges Vernay 'Blonde du Seigneur' 2019

This mixed case includes

3 x Saint-Joseph: Domaine Georges Vernay 'Terres d'Encre' 2019£0.00

Saint Joseph 'Terres d'Encre' from Domaine Georges Vernay is a classic dark, Northern Rhône Syrah - this wine has an appealing bouquet of violets and dark berries and sumptuous black fruit palate, offset by some cooler granitic notes, a fine acidity and some deftly-integrated oak.

3 x Côte Rôtie: Domaine Georges Vernay 'Blonde du Seigneur' 2019£0.00

Bright floral nose with notes of black fruit, olives and pepper. Silky persistent tannins and good acidity give a lengthy smooth finish.
