Mosel: Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2018

This steep (50% incline), rocky vineyard in the north of the Mosel is named after the sundials ('Sonnenuhr') that were built so that workers knew what time to break for lunch. It produces some of the most elegant white wines in the world and this sweet, late-harvested Riesling can be counted among that number!

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt

A 650 year-old, family-run estate based in Trier in the Mosel, with prime vine-holdings in the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer valleys. The estate farms 46 hectares in total, 12 hectares of which are scattered among the extraordinary but challenging slopes of the Mosel.

Skillfully managed from 1983 until her sad passing in 2016 by the quality-focused owner Annegret Reh-Gartner (herself married to a two-star Michelin chef, Gerhard Gartner), this is one of the leading wineries in Germany and accordingly it is a member of the prestigious VDP association.

Mosel: Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese - Yapp Brothers One Minute Review

Grant Berry reviews the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese from Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt - from a single vineyard site called 'Sonnenuhr' meaning 'sun dial', with steep slopes that mean the vines catch the sun all day long, and a heat-absorbing slate soil that allows a late harvest ('Spätlese'). This results in a slightly sweet wine, fresh, nicely balanced against acidity with stone fruit and baked apple notes, ideal with cheese or desserts.
