Nuits-Saint-Georges: Domaine Bertagna Premier Cru 'Les Murgers' 2017
This Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Murgers' is in an excellent drinking window with a supple mouth-feel and impressive density preceded by black cherry, cranberry and spice aromatics. Pinot Noir of this quality is an ideal partner for game birds, lamb and ripe soft-rind cheese.
Fresh red fruit aromas predominate with a touch of spice and cedary oak. Full in flavours of forest fruits, a touch of ‘sous-bois’ (forest floor) and velvety tannins.
From a 1 hectare mid-slope plot on the Nuits-Saint-Georges side of the vineyard (close to Vosne-Romanée), its limestone-clay soils contain a good proportion of gravel making it very free-draining and moderating the water retention of the clay. Farmed to organic principles (uncertified), Domaine Bertagna has holdings across the Côte de Nuits and produces wines of great class and elegance.
Nuits-Saint-Georges remarkably has no Grand Cru appellations but a heady 37 Premier Crus (including those of neighbouring Prémeaux) on which its reputation is founded. Tending to the more gamey, meaty style of Pinot Noir, Clive Coates MW commented of 'Les Murgers' "...there is a bit of Vosne about them, and therefore an innate elegance."
