Côte de Nuits Wine

In the heartland of Pinot Noir, Frédéric Magnien has become one of our most sought-after Burgundy producers since we began importing his wines in 2020. Now working increasingly with terracotta amphora and older, often larger oak barrels and casks, his wines are organic, bright and clear - emphasising purity of terroir and grape.

On a visit in spring 2022 to his impressive winery in Morey-Saint-Denis, we were delighted to discover a brilliant Fixin - perfumed with black cherry and Asian spices on the nose with both density and sleekness on the palate. It's a great medium-bodied introduction to an underrated appellation which comes from the very north of the Côte de Nuits. It's ideal with small game or a wild mushroom fricassée.

A superb village-level Chambolle-Musigny from old vines has also joined the ranks - showing floral mulberry, blackcurrant and forestfloor aromatics married to a rich palate with impressive depth, ripe tannins and fresh mineral acidity. Poultry in a creamy sauce would be an apposite match.

We have also added two impressive organic Premier Cru bottlings: 'Les Ruchots' in Morey-Saint-Denis and 'Les Borniques' in Chambolle-Musigny. Both wines offer genuine value for money when compared to other wines of similar stature from the Côte de Nuits. 'Les Ruchots' is a stone's throw to the south-east of the largest of the Grand Cru monopoles in Burgundy - Clos de Tart. Formed of the same bedrock of limestone, the wines typically show dark cherry and forest floor aromatics and an intense damson-like fruit core with great balance and complexity. 'Les Borniques' lies just north of the Grand Cru of Musigny in Morey' and is a tiny (1.42 hectare) site where, again, limestone dominates. This gives great mineral complexity to the wines with sweet baking spice and poached plum aromatics unfurling over time. Both can be approached in their youth but are all the more complex with 5 to 10+ years bottle age.

These new wines join our existing listings of a generous and medium-bodied Côte de Nuits-Villages from the 'Croix Violette' lieu-dit just north of Gevrey'. Offering a terrific introduction to Burgundy, it has floral cranberry and redcurrant fruit, fresh acidity and supple texture. Frédéric's textbook poised and autumnal 'Vieilles Vignes' Gevrey-Chambertin is sourced from 55 year-old vines. It features a more savoury edge to counter the berry fruit and has sufficient stuffing in a good vintage to last 5 to 10 years. Not to be missed is a profound and ageworthy Premier Cru 'Lavaut-Saint-Jacques' (Gevrey-Chambertin) that benefits from a good few years in bottle before careful decanting brings out a wealth of mulberry and tayberry scents and flavours. Finishing the extensive Magnien selection is a superlative Chambertin-Clos de Beze Grand Cru – the epitome of red Burgundy. A sleeping giant, this brooding, concentrated cassis and licorice-scented wine has terrific minerality and an extensive finish. A bucket list wine.

In the centre of Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Henri Richard continues to go from strength to strength under the stewardship of Sarah Bastien. During our visit in 2022, it was a sign of the times that the once lavishly signposted winery was now easily overlooked – a clear message that they have far more customers and suitors than available wine. Their delicious Gevrey-Chambertin from the 'Aux Corvées' lieu-dit is made in a rich, opulent style with an abundance of sour red cherry notes prevalent from nose to palate. Duck with cherries would make a perfect pairing. A stately Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is also available (albeit in short supply), and already demonstrates great depth and complexity. A herb-encrusted lamb rack would be apposite and it will age beautifully over the next decade or more.

Further to the south - in the tiny appellation of Vougeot - Eva Rey's Domaine Bertagna has been producing modern, generous and long-lived wines since she took over the domaine in 1988. A rich, opulent Vougeot Premier Cru 'Les Cras' is a delicious and exceptionally rare Chardonnay, even by Côte de Nuits standards. The reds include a succulent sandalwood-tinged Vougeot 'Villages' rouge that is redolent of loganberries, cedar and lingering length. By contrast, a dark fruit laden, powerful Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 'Les Murgers' has enough muscle to cope with roast beef after a good decant.

Distributed by our long-term Southern Rhône producer Yves Cheron, Domaine Misset owns enviable holdings across the Côte de Nuits that were snapped up by Yves' grandfather after the Wall Street crash of 1929. A powerful but elegant Vosne-Romanée 'Les Barreaux' benefits from decanting to let its elegant aromas unfurl and has sufficient depth of berry fruit to last 5 to 10 years.

For the long-term, a sleek, dense Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is sourced from vines planted in the years after acquisition. It has sleek dark berry fruit aromas and flavours with a wild edge and merits decanting. A hearty 'Boeuf Bourguignon' would be just the ticket.
