Picpoul de Pinet: Domaine Gaujal 2023

This alluring and tangy Picpoul de Pinet wine is made just north of the Bassin de Thau, a large salt water lagoon near Montpellier in the Languedoc. It makes a bracing aperitif, but a bottle of Picpoul de Pinet and a bucket of oysters? Food and wine matching doesn't get much simpler or better than that. Certified organic.

Tasting Notes

This Picpoul de Pinet from Domaine Gaujal actually hails from Pinet itself, one of six communes permitted to deploy the appellation, and is rated by aficionados as being one of the best. We first were introduced to it by the then Mayor of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Jean-Pierre Boisson, on a buying trip to the Languedoc in 2003, when it was virtually unknown in the U.K. It is bien classique with a lovely citrus zest and ozone bouquet and whistle-clean plate with a bracing, fresh finish.

Unsurprisingly, this Picpoul de Pinet wine can frequently be found in the restaurants and shops that line the waterfront. Bring on the bivalves!
