Pouilly-Fuissé: Domaine de Roncevaux 'Sur La Roche' Premier Cru 2020
This first vintage-labelling of Pouilly-Fuissé 'Premier Cru' 'Sur La Roche' is a wonderfully soft and ripe organic Chardonnay from the experienced hands of Eric Savaret in Vergisson. The area produces some of the best-value Chardonnay in Burgundy and its elevation to '1er Cru' status is due recognition of its efforts to produce high quality wines. Textbook notes of bright zippy citrus, a flinty minerality, ripe stone fruit and lightly-buttered toast linger on the finish. Certified as an organic wine.
From the 2020 vintage, 22 Mâconnais 'climats' have been permitted to be labelled 'Premier Cru' – a first for the region. Totalling over 194ha (some 24% of the vineyard area), the Premier Cru sites are for Chardonnay only. It has been a 10-year journey of bureaucracy and wrangling which aims to work collectively to improve quality in the region and it is the first elevation of an area in Burgundy to 1er Cru status since 1943.
The Pouilly-Fuissé 'Sur La Roche' climat sits in the commune of Vergisson and is a small 1-hectare parcel of older vines (at least 40 years old) on stony limestone soils. Facing to the south-east, the aspect allows the fruit to receive full sun for most of the day yet retain freshness given its height at the top of the hill. Former electrical engineer, Eric Savaret, has spent the past 16 years building a reputation for high-quality whites in Pouilly-Fuissé and nearby Mâcon-Vergisson. This wine's 'belle charpente' means it will happily cellar for 5 years.

Domaine de Roncevaux
In 2000, Eric Saveret decided to retire from a career in electronic engineering in order to start his Domaine de Roncevaux in the south of the Maconnais. With a passion for wine and its traditions, he studied oenology and took over his father in law's 4.70 ha of vines, bottling his first vintage in 2004. He stopped using chemicals to treat the vines in 2012 and has since then only used organic substitutes in every part of the winemaking process, from vine-growing to filtration before bottling.
With a vision to always improving the quality of the wines, Eric has won a reputation in just over a decade of winemaking, winning two stars in the Guide Hachette.
