Rheinhessen: Jürgen Hofmann Reserve Chardonnay 2021
This Chardonnay is sourced from Jürgen Hofmann’s vineyards in and around Appenheim in the Rheinhessen. Located on ancient limestone-clay soils rich in fossils and shells, the resulting wine was harvested late to ensure fully mature fruit. Rich and creamy in texture, its citrus acidity and elegant body are supported by wonderful minerality, stone-fruit flavours and complex structure that is underlined by gentle oak. It’s a versatile wine for drinking with or without food and pairs perfectly with light poultry and herby fish dishes.
Located on the south-facing slopes, the limestone in the vineyard soils brings minerality with a clay-loess layer adding power and texture. From 35 year-old vines, it was deliberately picked late to ensure full ripeness in a cooler vintage.
Juicy yet creamy in texture, its vanilla aromas, citrus and honey on the finish belie a intense mineral core that can stand up to rich, smoked fish or steak.

Jürgen Hofmann
In 1971 the Hofmann family farm, which had practiced mixed agriculture up to this point, turned its focus exclusively to winemaking. Taking over in 1998, Jürgen has enthusiastically developed this estate which lies between Mainz and Bingen in the north of the Rheinhessen. He and his wife, Carolyn Willems-Willems, farm their respective family vineyards (Carolyn’s are in the Saar) and make wine together. The labels for the estates’ traditional portfolios, one located in Oberemmel, the other in Appenheim, bear individual illustrations that encapsulate the distinctive character of each wine and the soil on which it is grown. Jürgen has extensive winemaking experience across the work having trained at the renowned wine school in Geisenheim followed by stints in South Africa, California and Romania and for renowned German producer ‘Reh-Kendermann’.
