Rye Bourbon Whiskey: Spécialités Dumangin

Gilles Dumangin loves Bourbon with higher Rye content, so has blended this Bourbon from a number of barrels each with a higher than usual proportion of Rye in the mix to create a 28.5% Rye Bourbon. Aged for 4 years in new barrels in the USA, then double-barreled in Ratafia casks for 7 months in the heart of Champagne in northern France.

Tasting Notes

Gilles Dumangin is perhaps best known for his excellent grower Champagne and Ratafia Champenois. Few know of his predilection for collecting and drinking whisky from round the world. In 2020, he launched his collection of limited-edition small-batch whiskies finished in Ratatfia Champenois casks. This Batch 005 Bourbon Whisky is one of only 329 bottles produced and was bottled in January 2020.

Bourbon has to be aged for at least 3 years before bottling. Select 4-year old barrels of Bourbon sourced from US distilleries were re-blended before cask-finishing in Ratafia Champenois barrel T-0148 for 8 months and bottled in January 2020.

Light in colour, this is slightly drier than most Bourbons, given the increased Rye content (28.5%). The Ratafia Champenois barrels round out the finish double-casking.

Grape growing in the Dumangin family goes back some 350 years - Firmin Dumangin (born in the 1650s) was a viticulteur in the neighbouring village of Ludes. Early in the 21st Century Gilles Dumangin succeeded his father, Jacky, and is a fifth generation Champagne producer. The Dumangin family's tireless efforts to produce the best possible Champagne from their own grapes has been recognised by the prestigious French wine guide, Guide Hachette 2008, which has awarded the Dumangin Grand Réserve a Coup de Cœur.
