As opposed to the Chave's Domaine St Joseph (which is exclusively sourced from their own vineyards), the 'Offerus' includes an ever-diminishing proportion of Syrah grapes that Jean-Louis buys in. Like any drop that leaves the estate's cellars in Mauves, this wine receives the full Chave level of meticulous quality control.

As Jean-Louis's lifetime project in the hillsides above Mauves gains pace, the quality of the estate's Saint Josephs reaches new heights. This work, plus the purchase of the 4 hectare Clos Florentin walled vineyard in 2010, means that Jean-Louis can be more and more selective in the grapes he chooses for the domaine St Joseph and the proportion of bought in grapes for the 'Offerus' decreases (it is currently around 25%).

Gérard & Jean-Louis Chave

'De Père en Fils Depuis 1481' (from father to son since 1481) is the impressive statement that graces every bottle of Chave Hermitage. The Chaves farm 13.9 hectares (of Hermitage’s 132 hecatres) comprising 9.3 hectares of Syrah spread across 7 different climats and 4.6 hectares of Marsanne and Roussanne (in an 80% to 20% respective ratio). Gérard Chave (born in 1935) started working with his father in the late 1960s and was joined by his son Jean-Louis (born in 1968) in 1992 on completion of his viticultural studies at University of California, Davis and an MBA at Hartford. The Chaves are famous for their fastidious and skilful blending as their extensive vine-holdings give them a very broad palette of fruit to work with. Jean-Louis married his American wife Erin Cannon-Chave in 2003 and they have two children Louis (born 2006) and Emma (born 2008). In 2006 Jean-Louis Chave became President of the Hermitage Wine-Producers Association. As well as producing superb red and white Hermitage (which represent for many the benchmarks of the appellation) the Chaves also produce an excellent red Saint Joseph as well as a popular range of négociant wines.
