Domaine de L'Idylle (Phillippe & François Tiollier)

Savoie is an ancient and isolated vine area which deploys idiosyncratic grape varieties (originally introduced by monks from Chartreuse) that are seldom encountered elsewhere – Jacquére and Roussette for white and sparkling wines alongside Mondeuse for reds. The Tiollier family has nurtured vines in and around the village (and sub-appellation) of Cruet on the steep slopes of the Isère valley for generations. Situated in the Regional Nature Reserve of the Massif des Baugeas, Sylvain Tiollier works with his father Philippe and uncle François looking after various plots of vines over 47 acres of prime terroir and their fastidious approach to winemaking has turned Domaine de l'Idylle into a self-sustaining viticultural enterprise. Overgrown and abandoned parcels of vines have been carefully cleared and replanted and state of the art equipment has been installed in the ancient cellars.

Jason Yapp and Ruby Willis review the Savoie Jacquère from Domaine de L'Idylle - located in the hill village of Cruet between Burgundy and the Alps. A specialist grape that grows well at altitude, it produces fresh light wines that tend to be lower in alcohol - ideal as an aperitif.
