Stellenbosch: Migliarina Syrah 2020

A deep purple Syrah wine from boutique winemaker Carsten Migliarina. Juicy blackberry and wild strawberry flavours and aromas are balanced with fine-grained tannins and a lengthy fruity finish. Grilled meat, robust stews or a hearty roasted root vegetable dish would pair perfectly with this ripe Syrah.

Tasting Notes

Former sommelier Carsten Migliarina returned to his roots in southern Africa to make boutique wines after a long stint as a sommelier in London.

The grapes for this Syrah come from a three microclimates in the Helderberg ward to the south of Stellenbosch. High clay content in the soils retain water amidst the hot dry climate. Cooling ocean breezes wash over the vines in the afternoons, mitigating the morning heat. Only 3300 bottles were produced.

Migliarina Wines

Former sommelier Carsten Migliarina produced his first vintages in 2002, sourcing grapes from Franschhoek and maturing his Shiraz in a friend's garage. Earning his stripes as a contract winemaker in South Africa, Germany and Romania, his boutique range is highly sought after on export markets. His range has since expanded to encompass Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Riesling and Shiraz, sourcing fruit from the best grapes and vineyards he can find. Production is tiny and intervention minimal, making between 200-500 cases of each wine whilst renting cellar space from other producers.
