Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc occupy the top spots in the list of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the world. These two examples, however, are far from run-of-the-mill and could scarcely be grown further apart. The Chardonnay comes from the cool climate Mount Barker region of Western Australia. It is 'whole bunch' pressed, fermented with natural yeasts and raised in barrels of various sizes and ages to produce white stone fruit flavours and fresh acidity. We are delighted to have shipped the bien typique Gardrat Sauvignon 2019 from the chalky soils of the Charente's Atlantic coast, after a supply hiatus in 2018. Elderflower-perfumed with a crisp palate, it is a great partner for salads or fish.

Another estate that suffered a challenging 2018 was Château la Canorgue which was hit by a catastrophic hail storm in May of that year, wiping out most of the vintage. They are certainly back with a bang with their 2019 rosé, made from Syrah, Grenache and Mouvedre, which brings to mind crushed raspberries.

The reds line-up includes a quaffable Merlot - Syrah from the Ardèche and a 'macho, proud, generous and fiercely authentic' (Matthew Jukes, Money Week) blend of Carignan, Grenache Noir and Syrah from Fitou. Proving that the Languedoc can provide finesse as well as fierceness, we have shipped a parcel of Domaine Girard's Pinot Noir 2018 that impressed us no end when tasted earlier this year. 'Pinot' does not enjoy the higher temperatures of the south, but this example from the far western edge of the Languedoc close to Carcassonne is planted on north-west facing slopes at elevation (350m above sea level), hence its wonderfully crisp freshness.

This mixed dozen features as our 'Sommelier Service' case, where customers subscribe to a delivery every two months of six different wines (two bottles of each) for £149, delivered. (See here for regular wine deliveries). As ever, this case is available as all red or all white & rosé.

This mixed case contains two bottles each of:

WHITE:
Domaine Gardrat: Vin de Pays Charentais Sauvignon 2019
Forest Hill Vineyard: 'Estate' Chardonnay 2018

ROSÉ:
Côtes du Luberon: Château La Canorgue Rosé 2019

RED:
Coteaux de l'Ardèche: 'Les Terrasses' Rouge 2018
IGP Pays d'Oc: Domaine Girard Pinot Noir 2018
Fitou: Domaine des Rebouls 2016

This mixed case includes

2 x Domaine Gardrat: Vin de Pays Charentais Sauvignon 2019£0.00

This Vin de Pays Charentais from Domaine Gardrat is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, delicately perfumed with subtle elderflower and nettle scents and a racy, mineral-edged palate. It's a lovely, light, uplifting wine that works well as an aperitif or partner to salads or seafood.

Now certified as an organic wine from this vintage.

2 x Forest Hill Vineyard: 'Estate' Chardonnay 2018£0.00

This well-balanced, textured Chardonnay from Western Australia was the top pick of our intrepid explorer Meirion on his 'dolphin spotting' trip Down Under early in 2017.

2 x Côtes du Luberon: Château La Canorgue Rosé 2019£0.00

Provence is renowned for it's rosé wines, and Château la Canorgue's is a superlative example. Made from organically grown Provençal staples Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, it is a wine light enough to be drunk alone, but would happily stand up to bouillabaisse or a Provençal goat's cheese.

2 x Coteaux de l'Ardèche: 'Les Terrasses' Rouge 2018£0.00

A cherry-coloured red wine, hailing from a blend of Merlot and Syrah with soft, forest fruit flavours that has proven to be a versatile and popular option.

2 x IGP Pays d'Oc: Domaine Girard Pinot Noir 2018£0.00

Domaine Girard’s Burgundian-style Pinot Noir from the Languedoc hills owes its freshness to planting at 350m altitude, receiving cooling breezes from both the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Bags of intense berry fruit and gentle spice make this an ideal aperitif or moreish partner to summer dishes.

2 x Fitou: Domaine des Rebouls 2016£0.00

A juicy, spicy blend of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache from the red wine only appellation of Fitou. It took us a while to find a Fitou we liked, and this one we love.
