Coastal Region: Migliarina Grenache 2018
A ruby-red aromatic Grenache from boutique winemaker Carsten Migliarina. Juicy raspberry, cherry and strawberry fruit balance this Grenache wine with fondant tannins, a velvety texture and a lengthy forest fruit finish. Delicious with with robust pork dishes, spicy sausages and barbecues.
Former sommelier Carsten Migliarina returned to his roots in southern Africa to make wine after a long stint as a sommelier in London.
The grapes for this single-vineyard Grenache come from vineyards in the Coastal Region of South Africa. Cold-soaked fruit extracted plenty of flavour and tannin from the skins to give structure to this wine. That process will allow additional flavours to develop in bottle as this wine ages. A perfumed forest fruit core is set against ripe young tannins, fresh acidity that will gently soften over time. Only 3800 bottles were produced.

Former sommelier Carsten Migliarina produced his first vintages in 2002, sourcing grapes from Franschhoek and maturing his Shiraz in a friend's garage. Earning his stripes as a contract winemaker in South Africa, Germany and Romania, his boutique range is highly sought after on export markets. His range has since expanded to encompass Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Riesling and Shiraz, sourcing fruit from the best grapes and vineyards he can find. Production is tiny and intervention minimal, making between 200-500 cases of each wine whilst renting cellar space from other producers.
